Compassion International Prepares For Projected Food Crisis

With the after effects of a horrible set of disasters that swept through Burma and China last month, concerns are growing of an upcoming unprecdented global food crisis.

By the end of June, an estimated 450,000 Cambodian students who daily depend on free breakfast courtesy of the U.N. World Food Program, will become victims of soaring global food prices.

Compassion International, which is one of the world’s largest Christian organizations feeding and caring for hungry children worldwide, has spoken out about the crisis and its desire to tackle the issue head on with its newly formed Global Food Crisis Fund.

Mark Hanlon, senior vice president at Compassion International, said, “This is an urgent situation that Compassion is committed to seeing through to the end.”

A 50 percent rise if food prices, according to the United Nations, could place nearly 800 million people across the world into starvation within less than two years. Compassion International points out that a large majority of these may be children.

“Our top priority is our children, and we’re making every effort possible to meet their immediate needs,” Hanlon said.

Despite the crisis, Compassion is in position to supply food and supplies to millions of people through the cooperation and donations of churches and other Christian humanitarian organizations.

Founded in 1952, Compassion International serves the needs of children in over 24 countries. This year, the American Institute of Philanthrophy awarded Compassion International with an "A" rating in its numerous humanitartian efforts throughout the world.

“We’re also mobilizing our church partners and advocates across the country to take action on this pressing issue in their own communities,” Hanlon said.
