New Poll Show Americans Views Of Country’s Moral Climate

According to a recent Gallup Poll released on Thursday, 81 percent of Americans say the moral values of the country as a whole are getting worse, while only 11 percent believe it is getting better.
The poll showed how only 15 percent of Americans overall considered the country's moral values to be "excellent" or "good;" while 44 percent said the moral climate and state of the country to be "poor."
In comparison to Democrats and independents, Republicans polled felt more strongly that there was a moral decline in America. In 2006, 36 percent of both Republicans and Democrats polled said the state of moral values was poor. However, over the past two years, Republicans who believe the country's moral state to be poor have have grown significantly to 51 percent, compared to 40 percent of Democrats.
Although the Gallup report highlighted issues of gay marriage, celebritiy misbehavior and sex scandals, it did not confirm if these issues helped contribute to Republican's views on the country's morality.
"Whatever the cause," the report stated, "this may signal that Republicans will be particularly anxious to elect a new president this November who will help to uphold or restore the values they now find lacking in the country."
The Gallup Poll also found Americans with lower incomes are more 'pessimistic' about the moral state of the country compared to upper-income Americans. Results show that 51 percent of Americans with a household income of less than $30,000 consider the moral state "poor," while 35 percent of those with an income of $75,000 and above say the same.
The Gallup Poll, which consisted of telephone interviews with 1,017 adults, ages 18 and older, was conducted May 8-11, 2008. It is clear that since 2002, a majority of Americans agree that the moral climate of the country is getting worse, which could be hot topic once again for this year's presidential election in November.
